The importance of having a Local Exhaust System in the workplace

A Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system is an engineering control measure designed to reduce employee exposure to airborne contaminants in the workplace by capturing the emission at source and transporting it to a safe emission point or a filter/scrubber.

What kinds of contaminants does a LEV system remove from the workplace?

A LEV system works by extracting the air away from the workplace and removing the contaminants within the air. Types of contaminants a LEV system removes from the air include:

  • Mould spores
  • Welding fumes
  • Gasses
  • Vapour
  • Smoke
  • Dust
  • Mist

The main LEV elements are:

  • A hood of some kind, where the contaminants enter the system
  • Ducting, which safely transports the contaminants to a filter/cleaner/exhaust point
  • Air cleaner/filter/scrubber
  • Air mover: a fan to power the system
  • Discharge: a safe point for the pollutants to exit

Why is it important?

It protects employees’ health

According to HSE, it is estimated that in 2018, 12,000 lung disease deaths were linked to past exposures in the workplace.

A LEV system is designed to protect the health of employees by removing the airborne contaminants and preventing harmful exposure to them.

Protecting your employees is required by law

Although it is not required by law to have a LEV system in place, the law requires employees to be protected from harm in the workplace. Specific legislation such as the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH requires employers to protect their employees if they are exposed to harmful contaminants, and in many cases, a LEV system is the solution.

This is custom heading element

We design, develop and install bespoke LEV systems for all industries, from initial concept through to final completion. We even perform LEV system testing for both new and existing clients.

We provide a thorough examination and testing (TExT) of LEV systems so that you can have complete peace of mind that you are complying with legal requirements and the obligation to test your LEV system at least once in every 12-14 months period. We also provide nationwide coverage, to businesses of all sizes, and we can offer a bespoke service package that includes both the servicing and testing of your LEV system on an annual basis.

Do you think you need a LEV system and want to discuss your requirements with us?
